Cottage Pie

This quick and easy recipe is extremely easy to make. You will need the following equipment Chopping Board, Sharp Knife, Large Frying Pan, Large Spoon (wooden or other), Teaspoon, Measuring Jug, Masher and Dish

Main Ingredients

  • 450g lean minced beef
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 onion, peeled and finely chopped
  • 2 carrots, peeled and diced
  • 1 tablespoon plain flour
  • 400g tin tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoon tomato purée(optional)
  • 125ml water
  • Salt and black pepper
  • 1 kg potatoes, cooked
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • Little bit of milk (or cream)

Method

  1. Heat the oil in the frying pan.
  2. Add the onion and garlic until soft.
  3. Remove from the pan & keep warm.
  4. Heat a little more oil and add the minced beef until brown in colour.
  5. Stir in the flour and cook.
  6. Add in the onions, carrots, tomatoes, purée (if using), water, salt and pepper.
  7. Bring to the boil and simmer for 15-20 mins.
  8. Preheat the oven @180°C.
  9. Pour the mixture into the a dish.
  10. Mash the potatoes how you like it! Add milk / butter etc.
  11. Place the mash on top of the mince in the dish.
  12. Cook in the oven for 20-25 minutes until brown.

Top Tip

For an extra crispy potato topping, sprinkle over some grated cheese before putting into the oven.

Top Tip

For an extra veggie punch, why not add in a cup of frozen peas or sweetcorn at step 6 or serve these alongside your meal?
